”This medium is great and so effective for seeing Jack's techniques.
His live demonstration makes it look so easy, but the result is very convincing and pleasing to the eye. Even though the original video was produced over 10yrs ago the teaching and demonstration of a master of his craft proves to be timeless and still very much relevant and valuable.
This DVD lesson gets straight to the point and has you painting the essential elements without any hype.

The sketching CD is much the same, valuable information that cuts straight to the chase and again shows a master at work who is also able to pass on and impart his wisdom.
In essence you witness the result of years of experience distilled for us to use to our advantage.
I have read and used many art instruction books and videos over the years and this material for sheer gutsy content still holds up to all the rest of the contemporary material.“

“I highly recommend the Jack McDonogh DVD on watercolour painting and the CD on pencil sketching.

These are really a must for anybody starting out in these forms of art.

Jack McDonogh was the best teacher of watercolour painting I have ever seen.

He also makes black & white sketching look too simple.

Both of these would be excellent tools and would give anybody a good grounding”.

"It was my great honour to have known Jack for much of my early life, having first met him in 1956 when I was ten years old. My father and Jack were good friends and knowing of my emerging interest in art Jack generously gave me many pointers and a couple of his watercolours - after I had the cheek to ask if he had any leftovers. These remain amongst my most cherished possessions.

In later years, when we lectured together, I continued to see Jack on many occasions. When he dropped into my studio for a chat, as he frequently did, I was always struck by his generosity of spirit and passion for his subject - art. I miss Jack and those impromptu visits, especially as we shared another passion - the game of golf.

In his excellent publication, ‘An introduction to Watercolour Painting’ Jack helps the beginner with an invaluable introduction the use of watercolours, the most daunting of art mediums. In easy to follow steps, Jack’s, with his engaging manner, takes us through the use of materials, the application of paint and a thorough explanation of his approach to landscape painting.

The equally important book, ‘An introduction to Pencil Sketching’, is an essential companion and should really be studied before attempting watercolours, as many of the topics, such as the principles of composition, apply equally when painting.

In ‘Pencil Sketching’, Jack McDonogh leads us through the various stages of working in graphite pencils. After starting with a basic explanation of the materials needed Jack then explores preliminary techniques and the more conceptual matters of perception and creativity which, as he rightly stresses, are the final goals of the visual artist.

‘Watercolour Painting’ and ‘Pencil Sketching’ are publications of lasting quality and an essential guide to those starting out.  The lessons they contain are never out of date. It is exciting to see that Jack’s books and videos, as CDs and DVDs, are now readily available online".

"The late Jack McDonogh was one of the first artists to recognise the terrific potential of films in teaching of the arts. How fortunate that this knowledge of his many years of tutoring and painting has been preserved for future generations of artists!

The DVD and CD contain a wealth of information to help the beginner and the advanced student to understand the skills that must be developed in order to become proficient in the medium.

Great direction is passed on in a simple, easy to understand fashion, delivered in a friendly encouraging way from a Master of his craft.

I strongly recommend the DVD and CD to all who seek assistance in becoming adept in handling this difficult medium."

DVD "An Introduction to Watercolour Painting"

Review by   the Australian Artist   Patrick Carroll, 13th Feb 2009

"The mystery of watercolour painting has remained that for many painter's who choose to express themselves with the brush. It can be a difficult and evasive medium and the prospect of facing a piece of virginal white paper with a jar of water; an assortment of pigments and a sable hair brush is for some a daunting task. Those who dare are often frustrated as their failed washes gather on piles of unforgiving pages of watercolour pads.

However for the persistent few who continue the good fight the rewards are plentiful as the tentative mark makers begin to master a medium that makes an image appear "like magic" from a brush charged with colour and a simple container of water. The early struggle proves worth the pain as the brush becomes the wand and the painter appears as "The Magician"!

Jack McDonogh's DVD, "An Introduction to Watercolour Painting" is designed to assist the beginners in the watercolur painting journey take the first tentative steps. Jack has gone to great lengths to prepare the painter's who wish to join him on this exciting pathway to understand the basic requirements, from the tools of the trade; to   paper stretching techniques; to actual demonstrations of his own skillfully rendered paintings.

The directive to embrace simplicity is the main message given to the beginner with this comprehensive painterly instructions. One is almost able to see one's self   overcoming self doubt and fear and "having a go!".

The subjects that Jack paints as demonstrations deal with land and sky without complexity in design or composition. He limits his palette (of eleven colours in total), to a few warms and cools and   displays his own brand of magic as master magician.

I sincerely recommend the DVD to those who are tempting themselves to TRY ...it might not make at easy but it will certainly reduce   some of the difficulties and pitfalls of the process of painting watercolours."

Extracts from an article titled "Vintage McDonogh" featured in the Australian Artist magazine by Patrick Carroll,

“Jack McDonogh the artist first entered my life when I was a young boy living in Bathurst in 1955. My Mother, Marie was encouraging my interest in painting at that time and she was delighted to have been privileged to watch Jack demonstrate his watercolour skills for the Primary School P & F. She was even bold enough to ask for the demonstration sketch to bring it home for me. I can still recall the work and the immediate affect it had on me. It was about 20” x 16”, a boldly painted storm with strong blacks, umbers and ultramarine blues. The vitality and movement, the emotive arresting realism were so overpowering to me at the time that I immediately became a Jack McDonogh disciple.

If Van Gogh is synonymous with the iris, if Nolan is the embodiment of Ned Kelly, then McDonogh must claim just and proper title to the Gold Bathurst Poplar. I never tired of feasting on the simple yellow splash that interrupted the brooding Bathurst landscape in its autumn splendour. This was McDonogh’s motif, so the rest of us painter's had to look elsewhere for inspiration. I have to make a confession here. I have stolen Jack’s poplar from time to time.

Jack McDonogh Painting from 1966 in the Bathurst Art Gallery

The singular work of Jack’s that stands out in my mind is, “Dusk by the Lake”, (shown above) in the collection of the Bathurst Regional Art Gallery. It is a sensitively executed watercolour, full of light, atmosphere and drama. A beautifully simplified painting, a timeless piece – vintage McDonogh.”

"It’s a great honor for me to be invited to tell you about Jack McDonogh’s book “An Introduction to PENCIL SKETCHING”

As a practicing artist and tutor, I know that singularly the most important skill an artist must have is the ability to draw.

Even when we think we have stopped drawing and have started painting, we are still drawing. Only difference is, now we’re drawing with a brush!

In his book “Pencil Sketching”, Jack McDonogh gives us a comprehensive range of well chosen, common sense, practical tips to aid our ability to sketch and draw.

But this is not just another “how to draw book”, because in Jack McDonogh we do not only have a wonderful artist, but also a superb teacher and this to me is the big difference this book has to offer!

Combining his great depth of experience and expertise as an artist, with his almost unique ability to communicate in a simple, down to earth way, Jack explains quite complex subjects such as perspective, composition and reflected light in a way that is easy to understand and put into practice whether by a beginner or experienced artist.

In this book he teaches us just about all we need to know to be able to sketch and draw proficiently and provides us with a range of valuable physical aids to help simplify the process, including “angle-sticks” and the “viewing mount”. All the reader has to do is to follow the instructions, practice the easy to follow steps and success is guaranteed.

Reading Jack McDonogh’s Pencil Sketching book is like being taught how to draw with the security of your grandfather’s arm around your shoulder. You know you are in safe hands and you have nothing to fear if you just do as you are instructed.

If you only ever buy one book on sketching, I thoroughly recommend it be this one."

"I   was extremely happy with the CD and DVD and only wish there were more DVD's to follow up with this artist. They are well priced and good value, if you have any more please do not hesitate to let me know. I live in Queensland and I am a retired professional who now paints as a hobby. I also take private lessons in water colour and found the whole DVD very helpful. I am going to email and recommend your web site to friends who are just starting out with water colour. I was also very pleased with the prompt delivery. We need more of this type of thing in Australia where people can access it at a reasonable cost."

Juanita Bailey, Stanthorpe, Queensland

"Having reviewed the contents in depth as an experienced watercolourist, I heartily recommend the purchase of this imaginative CD and DVD. It represents the ideal fast track start for embryo artists to master the intricacies of both pencil sketching and watercolour painting. Jack's teaching modules are a breeze to follow and implement."

"I have received both (CD and DVD) and without a doubt they are the best I have come across and that includes numerous hours searching the net world wide for beginners help with watercolour painting and sketching, and to think I found help only a few hundred miles from home,   I would like to say more   BUT I'm off to start practicing, can't wait for the other CD's."
